Gift Cards: Avoid This Error!

Last updated on November 2nd, 2021 at 04:24 pm

Gift cards can be a great way to thank key officials and other key swim meet volunteers.  You can find deals on them at warehouse clubs and during the holidays. Some teams customize the cards they give by putting a team logo and “Thank You” on them. However, be aware that some do expire.  Adam Caldwell, a meet director, meet and admin referee, and swim club co-owner, learned this the hard way. He shares the following humorous post based on a personal experience.

Gift Card Tip for Saving Money at Your Swim Meet

If you are looking for ways to save money at your swim meet, try giving your volunteers bad gift cards.  You won’t have to spend any money, and your volunteers will think they are being rewarded for all their hard work.  Then, when they contact you about the bad cards, just tell them that the cards are fine, and that they (or the store’s employee) must have done something wrong.  If you do it just right, they will apologize to YOU for wasting your time, and will be too embarrassed to follow-up with you again.  However, you might want to keep track of who you give the bad cards too…in that if you pull this trick on the same volunteer in back to back meets, they might catch onto your ruse.

Thanks for the laugh and the tip Adam!
