Chief Judge Help: CJ Deck Assignments

Last updated on February 10th, 2023 at 03:10 pm

Large Championship swim meets may use multiple Chief Judges. If so, the Team Lead Chief Judge will find this Chief Judge assignments worksheet useful. It has space to record both off-deck and on-deck assignments.  Modify as needed to fit your swim meet needs.

Chief Judge Assignments

Chief Judge assignments vary from meet to meet. The Professional Chief Judge document by USA Swimming details the role of the Chief Judge at championship meets. The following points briefly explain the assignments listed on this worksheet.

Off-Deck

Off-deck assignments include things a Chief Judge might do before and/or after a swim meet session.

Check In/Set Deck

Manage official check-in, check credentials for first time (at this meet) officials and assign Stroke and Turn officials their positions for the session, or “set the deck.” (These additional forms might be useful for the person in this position.)

Stroke Briefing, Protocol, Jurisdiction

Do the stroke briefing, including Stroke and Turn official protocol and jurisdiction, at the pre-session officials meeting.

Shirts, Radios, Towels

Some swim meets give shirts to all officials who work the meet. Others require officials to work a specified number of sessions to receive a shirt. The person given this assignment oversees shirt distribution.  On this worksheet, this person also distributes radios to designated officials before the session, runs the radio check, and then collects and charges them afterward. If used, this person also manages towels for officials.

Relay Take-off (RTO) Slips, Heat Sheets, Lane Timer Sheets

Distribute Relay Take-off Slips to Relay Take-off Judges and heat sheets to officials.  Additionally, put out lane timer sheets on the right chairs. Collect lane timer clipboards after meet and return to admin area.

Counters and Bells

Only needed during sessions with events 500 yards or longer. Distribute and collect lap counters and bells.

Evaluations and Tax Letters

If used, distribute meet evaluation forms and letter verifying official’s service for tax purposes. Arrange for collection of evaluation forms.

On-Deck

The On-Deck section of the worksheet notes where each Chief Judge is stationed during the designated session. This one denotes different corners of an eight lane pool at a meet where odd-numbered heats start at one end, and even-numbered heats start at the other.
