Swim Officiating Course

Last updated on August 12th, 2021 at 04:48 pm

The National Federation of State High School Associations, or NFHS, offers an online Officiating Swimming and Diving course. Many benefit from having well-trained swim officials. Taking this course can help parent volunteers become better trained. Additionally, USA Swimming also offers free online Officials Training Videos 24/7.

Why take an online swim officiating course?

This online course can:

  • Help parents and others determine interest level
  • Help to prepare new officials
  • Provide a refresher course for those with more experience.

Although designed to train high school swim officials, those from other leagues or organizations can also benefit. In doing so, they will need to account for rule differences.

Quickly Find Rule Differences

Planning to officiate for an organization other than high school? You’ll want to be aware of rule differences. The Our Kids Initiative has a rules differences summary chart for various swimming organizations. It also has links to the rule books of many governing bodies.

Where is the course located?

Click to go directly to the Officiating Swimming and Diving course. Next, follow the process to “Order Course.” (As of July 27, 2020, there was no charge for the course.) If you do not already have an account, you will need to register to get one. Once registered and ordered, the course will be available in your account dashboard. It does not need to be done all at once.

Who can take an NFHS officiating course?

Anyone who registers. Be aware that course completion does not equal official certification for the NFHS or any other organization.

Is the course only for high school swim officials?

No. Many can benefit from well-trained swim officials. Of course, those planning to be high school officials will profit from taking the online training. However, other leagues also need officials. Some have very limited training opportunities. So, these officials also gain from additional training like this.

Young adults get a chance to “Give Back” through officiating

More and more young adults are choosing to become or remain involved in sports as officials. Taking an online course during down-time can help them determine their interest level.
